The music on the soundtrack had a timid feel to it, and it didn’t seem to mesh with what was going on the screen. It was like two worlds that didn’t come together. The film was shot on location in Israel, so there was an attempt at authenticity, but the music was recorded in a studio. The result was like a Sergio Leone spaghetti western, or an early Fellini film. When some of the scenes are funnier than “The Life of Brian,” you know there’s trouble.
The movie has only a few moving moments. The concept of the whole thing being a re-enactment by tourists just undercuts any power the material is supposed to have.Everything we see isn’t real, anyway. As a movie about youth culture, it feels false and doesn’t have the fun of “Hair,” a musical that also didn’t feel like a rock opera. As a movie about Jesus Christ, it’s also a failure, showing a young man with no charisma and a terrible voice. If you’re a Christian, you definitely want to avoid this film.“The Passion of the Christ” and even “The Last Temptation of Christ” would be preferable.I’m now glad I never bought the soundtrack album.
